5 Reasons Why You Should Get A Food Scale

The most common questions I get are ‘How do I lose weight?’ and ‘What diet should I follow?’. By now, I’m sure that everyone knows fat loss comes down to a calorie deficit. The problem is that people are simply not willing to track their calories. I always fail to understand why this is the case. People always come up with some or the other reason to justify the fact that they cannot track calories. In fact, some will be more willing to completely eliminate a certain food group from their diet than getting a scale and tracking what they eat.

If you are someone who wishes to lose weight but fails at doing so, I definitely recommend giving this approach a try. While the choice is yours, I’ll try to give you 5 reasons why I think you should get a food scale.

1. You will actually start seeing results

I think this has to be one of the primary reasons you should get a food scale. As you can imagine, tracking calories with any sort of certainty is almost impossible without a scale if you’ve never done it before. Once you start using a scale, you can be consistent with what you eat and you will be able to see the results given that you are eating in accordance with your goals.

2. Get better at ‘eyeballing’ calories

Let’s be real, you aren’t going to have a scale with you at all times. But the skill you develop by using a scale will help you ‘eyeball’ the number of calories in a given portion of food since you will be used to weighing it. Now while I agree this is easier said than done, it definitely is a benefit that cannot be overlooked. In fact, if you’re planning to stay fit in the long run, and you wish you eat out and enjoy food, you definitely need some experience using a sale so as to learn portion control.

3. Just like anything else, you will get better at it over time

If your excuse for not buying scale is the fact that tracking is too difficult, you really shouldn’t worry about it. As weird as it feels thinking about weighing your food, it is very intuitive and you will definitely get a hang of it within a week.

4. It is relatively cheap

If you have ever considered getting an online detox or a meal service, let me tell you that getting a food scale is going to be a lot cheaper. Think of it as a long term investment which will help you learn portion control. Hence, this excuse doesn't even stand a chance.

5. It will help you start cooking

Don't get me wrong, you don't need to be the worlds best chef to hit your macros. But if you're someone who can’t cook anything other than instant noodles, getting a food scale might work in your favor and help you develop a new skill!

Now, while I know this post sounds like a weak sales pitch, I hope the 5 reasons mentioned above help you at least consider getting a food scale as an option. You can try it, and if it doesn’t work out, you always have the option to get over it and move on.

In no way am I saying that it is easy, but nothing worth having comes easy. If you wish to get lean and stay lean in the long run, you will have to make a lifestyle change. There is no better way to diet than to understand what you're eating and controlling the portions. I don't believe eliminating food groups and restricting yourself is the way to go. That said, go with the approach that works for you as there is no 'one size fits all' in fitness.
